After three days of torrential rain on the Big Island, Hawaii we were really excited to spend a night at an incredibly comfortable Asian-inspired Bed & Breakfast. We had hiked, climbed, ran, biked, jumped, swam, kayaked, and snorkeled and I, for one, was exhausted!
This is something most people don’t tell you: It’s exhausting to be so active!
The Big Island has so many incredible activities to offer and I’m pretty sure we did 99% of them. We like adventure and we like to rough it, but at a certain point a girl needs a really, really, really long bath. AmIright, Ladies?
Luckily we saved our most indulgent hotel stay for last, so we could really recharge before hitting the ground running once again on O’ahu.
Lotus Garden Cottages
We spent the night at the Lotus Garden Cottages, an Asian-inspired bed & breakfast in Volcano, Hawaii. Lotus Garden Cottages offers 4 luxury rooms, each with unique decor and an incredible bathroom and kitchen.
I loved so many things about our stay here, including the fact that the rooms are all in completely separate wings of the property. They are only connected by a central wooden walkway, so you have complete privacy! How romantic is that?
The owner, Mr. Kim, moved to Hawaii over a decade ago to build this bed & breakfast. He spent years building each room himself, and has decorated them with artifacts he brought over from Korea. He says it took a few years to get used to the constant drizzle of the Hawaiian rainforest, but that he can’t imagine living anywhere else.
That is what I love about B&Bs: meeting people who are so passionate about an area that they literally created a home for others to enjoy a place as much as they do. Maybe it’s the Southerner in me, but that amount of hospitality is truly inspiring.
The Asian decor of each room goes well beyond the authentic artifacts, antiques, and furniture. It also includes the latest and greatest in kitchen and bathroom technology.
A huge tub, heaters built into the ceiling, thick bathrobes, and a sleek design really made us feel like we were staying in a luxury sweet in Seoul.
We had the added bonus of huge windows looking out into lush rainforest, though, since our room was so incredibly private.
I literally took pictures of the giant bathroom just to keep in mind for when we build our dream house.
The kitchen is minimal yet comfortable, with an eat-in nook and Keurig coffee maker.
I don’t drink coffee, so I really appreciated that Mr. Kim stocks each coffee tray with an assortment of herbal teas. Sipping a hot cup of tea while looking out of our huge window…. Hhhmmmmm…..
Let’s be honest: one main reason to book a bed & breakfast is the breakfast! It’s nice to not only sleep in a luxurious, romantic room but to be waited on the next morning without even having to get out of your robes.
I think I could live in a B&B permanently.
The next morning breakfast was hand delivered to our private patio. Full of fresh Hawaiian fruits and pastries, we felt so special eating local fruit while listening to the light rain drip around us.
I long for those times when I feel truly connected to a space, and this was one of those perfect moments where I just understood Hawaii and gave in to it’s tranquility.
